Moving Day for a Parent in the Upstate: How We Keep It Calm

A tidy bedroom in a retirement apartment on move-in day, with a made bed and quilt, a lamp and family photo on the nightstand, and an armchair by the window

Moving day is the part most families dread. For an older parent leaving a home in Simpsonville, Greenville, or anywhere in the Upstate, it can feel like the whole house is being packed into a single afternoon. The furniture they have known for forty years is on a truck. The kitchen is bare. And somewhere in the middle of it, Mom is sitting on the one chair that has not been loaded yet, trying not to cry.

It does not have to go that way. When Hawthorn Estate Co. manages a move, our goal is a calm day for your parent and a manageable one for you. Here is what that looks like.

The planning happens well before the truck shows up

A good moving day is built in the weeks before it. We sit down with your parent and your family, in person at the house or by video call if you live out of state, and talk through where they are going. A cottage in a retirement community near Greenville looks very different from a spare room at a daughter's house in Greer, and the plan should fit the new place.

We measure the new rooms and work out which pieces will fit and where they will go. Your parent gets to choose what comes along: the recliner they read in every night, the china cabinet from their wedding, the quilt their mother made. Nothing is decided for them. Our job is to help them see what will fit and to make sure the things they love most have a spot waiting.

Packing done carefully and labeled clearly

Packing a home where someone has lived for decades is slow work if you do it right. Our crew packs room by room and labels each box by where it goes in the new home, not just by where it came from. Medications, glasses, phone chargers, important papers, and a few comforts for the first night go in a separate set of bags that stays with your parent or with you.

Family photos, letters, and papers that turn up along the way are set aside for the family. We do not throw away anything personal without asking.

Your parent does not have to watch the house come apart

This is one of the things families tell us they did not know they could do. On moving day, many parents spend the morning with a son or daughter, a friend from church, or at the new place itself, while our crew handles the old house. Watching movers carry out a lifetime of furniture is hard, and there is no reason your parent has to sit through it.

We stay in touch with you throughout the day so you know where things stand.

The new place is set up before they walk in

This is the part we care about most. When your parent arrives at the new home, we want it to feel like theirs already. The bed is made with their own sheets and blankets. The lamp is on the nightstand next to their glasses. Their favorite chair is by the window. Pictures are hung where they asked for them. The kitchen has their coffee mug, a few dishes, and the things they reach for every morning.

A room full of unopened boxes can make a move feel like it never ended. A room that already looks like home lets someone sit down, take a breath, and start settling in.

What happens to everything that did not come along

Most moves to a smaller place leave a lot behind. Hawthorn can handle that too. Depending on what the family wants, we can run an estate sale for the remaining contents, arrange donations to local charities, and clear the house out so it is empty and broom clean. Families do not have to coordinate three or four different companies to finish the job. If the house needs looking after for a while afterward, we can talk about that as well.

A word for the family

Helping a parent move is an act of love, and it can still wear you out. If you are carrying a lot right now, Isaiah 46:4 is a good one to hold on to: "Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you." God carries us through every season, the late ones included, and you do not have to carry this one by yourself either.
