Named Executor of a Parent's Estate in the Upstate? Here Is What We Can Carry

The phone call usually comes a few weeks after the funeral. The casseroles have stopped arriving, the out of town relatives have gone home, and one of the grown children is holding a stack of paperwork with their name on it. Mom or Dad named them executor. Now they are trying to figure out what that really means, while still grieving and still going to work every day.
If that is where you are right now, we are sorry for your loss. We also want you to know that a big part of what lands on an executor's shoulders is something Hawthorn Estate Co. can carry for you.
The paperwork belongs to your attorney. The house full of belongings can belong to us.
Most families in Simpsonville, Greenville, and across the Upstate work with an estate attorney or a probate lawyer to handle the legal side. That is exactly right, and we do not give legal advice.
But there is a whole other side to settling an estate that nobody hands you a checklist for. It is the house itself and everything inside it. The furniture, the dishes, the tools in the garage, the jewelry box, the closets nobody has opened in years. Someone has to sort it, figure out what it is worth, decide where it goes, and leave the home empty and clean. For a lot of executors, that part is the heaviest.
That is the work we do every week.
What we take off your plate
When an executor calls us, we start with a visit to the home. We walk through it with you, or with whoever you want there, and we listen. Are there things the family has already claimed? Are there items the will names for specific people? Is there a deadline we need to work around?
From there, we handle the rest:
- Sorting the home carefully, keeping an eye out for paperwork, photos, keepsakes, and anything that looks important, and setting those aside for the family instead of tossing them.
- Researching and pricing items that have real value, so nothing worthwhile slips out the door for a few dollars.
- Planning and running the estate sale, from staging and pricing to working the sale days and handling the crowds.
- Arranging donations to local charities and ministries for what does not sell.
- Clearing out what remains and leaving the home broom clean.
Through all of it, we keep you updated. You will know what is happening and when, without having to be standing in the house every Saturday.
Clear records for the estate
Executors have a duty to account for what happens with the estate's property. We take that seriously. After a sale, you get a clear accounting of what sold and what the sale brought in, so you have something simple to share with your attorney and with the rest of the family.
That kind of clarity can also help keep the peace between siblings. When everyone can see how things were handled, there is a lot less room for hurt feelings later.
When you live far from the Upstate
Many executors we talk with do not live here anymore. They grew up in Mauldin or Fountain Inn and now live in Charlotte, Atlanta, or across the country. Flying in for long weekends to empty a parent's home is exhausting and expensive.
We can be your people on the ground. We can walk the home with you on a video call, set aside the items you want shipped or held, and take it from there. You can come back for the things that matter most to you, and leave the long days of sorting and selling to us.
You are allowed to grieve while this gets done
One of the hardest parts of being an executor is that the work starts before the grief has had any room to settle. You are making decisions about your mother's china while you still reach for the phone to call her.
We have seen how much lighter people feel when they can hand the heavy lifting to someone they trust. You still get to make the decisions that matter. You still get to walk through the house one last time and take what you want. You just do not have to do every box and every closet yourself.
Psalm 34:18 says the Lord is close to the brokenhearted. We believe that, and we try to treat every home we work in with the respect that comes with it. The things in that house belonged to someone who was loved.
