When One Parent Needs More Care: Downsizing a Couple's Home in the Upstate

A sunny living room in an older Upstate home with two floral armchairs by the window, a side table with a wedding photo and reading glasses, and moving boxes by the door

It often starts with a fall, a hospital stay, or a doctor saying it is time for more help. One parent now needs assisted living or memory care. The other is healthy enough to stay independent but is not going to keep running a four bedroom house in Simpsonville or Greenville alone. Suddenly the family is facing two moves at once, and a house full of fifty years of shared life has to be sorted with both of them in mind.

This is one of the hardest situations we see at Hawthorn Estate Co., and it is one we are glad to step into. Here is how we help Upstate families when a couple's home has to be downsized because one parent's needs have changed.

Two people, two new homes, one house

When a couple moves together, there is one plan. When one spouse moves into care and the other moves to a smaller apartment or a cottage, there are really three projects: setting up a care room, setting up an independent living space, and settling everything that is left in the house.

We start by sitting down with the family, at the kitchen table or by video call if you live out of state. We find out where each parent is going, how much room they will have, and what the timeline looks like. Care moves sometimes happen fast because a bed opens up or a hospital discharge date is set. We plan around that, so the parent who needs care gets moved first and settled well, and the rest of the house does not have to be decided in a weekend.

Making the care room feel like theirs

A room in assisted living or memory care is small, and every piece in it matters. We help the family pick the things that will make that room familiar: a favorite chair, a quilt, a few framed photos, the clock that always sat on the dresser. For a parent with memory loss, familiar things in familiar places can make the first weeks easier.

We measure the room, bring only what fits, and set it up before or on move in day. Clothes are labeled the way the community asks. Pictures are hung. The bed is made with their own linens.

Giving the other parent room to decide

The spouse who is moving to a smaller place often carries the most. They are worried about the person they love, and at the same time they are being asked to decide about the dining room set and the boxes in the attic. We go at their pace. They choose what comes with them to the new apartment, and we help them see what will fit.

There is also the question of things that belonged to both of them. Some couples want certain pieces to stay together. Some want items kept for children or grandchildren. We set those aside, mark who they are for, and make sure they get where they are going. Personal papers, letters, and photos that turn up are always set aside for the family. Nothing personal goes out without someone saying so.

Settling the rest of the house

Once both parents are moved, there is usually a full house left behind. Hawthorn can handle all of it. Depending on what the family wants, we can run an estate sale for the remaining contents, arrange donations to local charities, and clear out the house so it is empty and broom clean. You work with one company instead of lining up a sale company, a hauler, a donation pickup, and a cleaning crew on your own.

If the house needs looking after for a while, whether that means checking on it, keeping the yard up, or making sure nothing has gone wrong after a storm, we can talk about that too.

A word for the family

Watching a mother or father move into care while the other one tries to stay strong is hard on everyone. Adult children often end up making phone calls from work, driving back and forth from Greer or Spartanburg, and trying to hold it all together. If that is where you are, Galatians 6:2 is worth remembering: "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." You were never meant to carry this alone, and asking for help is not giving up. It is making sure both of your parents get the time and attention they need from you.
